Description:

Day 1: CUSCO – HUAYLLABAMBA. The Inca Trail tour starts very early, between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m., when passengers are picked up at their hotel and taken by bus to kilometer 82 (mile 50). We start the trek and cross the Urubamba River, where we can see the archeological site of Llaqtapata and the beautiful Verónica snow peak, which is 5,800 meters above sea level (19,028 FASL). After the lunch break, the trail leads to Wayllabamba valley, where visitors can admire the small villages and a river dating back from Inca times that springs from Salkantay snow peak and flows down. On the first night, we camp in Llulluchapampa, so it is possible to have contact with and listen to the Quechua language spoken by villagers and porters who escort us during this four-day tour.

Day 2: WAYLLABAMBA – PACAYMAYU. On the second day of the tour, trekkers get through several biomes before arriving at the difficult peak of Warmihuañusca, reaching its highest altitude 4,050 meters above sea level (13,287 FASL). This is a very special place for Andean people because, according to ancient aboriginal traditions, it is believed to be sacred. Deep valleys with bushy vegetation and snowy mountain tops can be seen, and this will be the best setting for lunch. Descent to Pacaymayu valley is planned for the afternoon, to arrive at the camping at 4 p.m.

Day 3: PACAYMAYU – WIÑAYHUAYNA. The plan for this day includes a tour around the impressive archeological sites of Rucaracay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, and Wiñayhuayna. During the tour, visitors enjoy a view of the lush vegetation in the highland rainforest and see birds such as the Andean condor. Later, there is a descent to 2,700 meters (8,860 ft) in order to camp in Wiñayhuayna.

Day 4: WIÑAYHUAYNA – MACHU PICCHU. On this day, the trek is shorter but very significant: we visit Intipunku, which means Door of the Sun, a place where the first sun rays of the summer solstice shine through. Trekkers will enjoy a really impressive panoramic view of the Machu Picchu citadel and the Waynapichchu sector. The most important places in the archeological site will be visited. After enjoying this very special place, visitors are taken by bus down to Aguas Calientes train station in order to return to Cusco.
