HISTORIC TOUR TO PORTOBELO

When the Spanish Colony was at its peak and the conquest of the Inca Empire in execution, the Spaniards put their eyes at strategic sites in Panama with the purpose of transferring their cargo from coast to coast.
Portobelo was the end of "Camino Real" that linked the oceans and began in Panama la Vieja in the Pacific. There, the old Spanish galleons unloaded their treasures to be transferred across the Isthmus, finally, were charged on ships that were waiting in Portobelo, and then be brought to the Old World. This activity was an attraction for buccaneers and pirates forcing the Spanish conquerors to build strengths to the protection and customs formalities. Despite all this was strategically planned, was Sir Francis Drake, the famous British buccaneers, who looted and destroyed Portobelo. Some time later, Sir Francis Drake was killed in battle or died of disease according to another source, in the area of Portobelo. His body still lay in a coffin of lead in the bottom of the bay of Portobelo.
Today, Portobelo, known as the site of the procession of the Black Christ that takes place every year in October and attracts thousands of pilgrims from Panama and other countries.
Today you have a rendezvous with history. Out of Panama, early in the morning, and we will continue toward the Atlantic coast. We will see a portion of the old "Camino Real." Once in Portobelo, will visit the Church of Christ Black, the former Customs House, and the strengths of the area. Our guide provide also sufficient information about the area. Towards mid-day, enjoy a lunch with a Caribbean-style seafood in a restaurant overlooking the bay of Portobelo. Return to the hotel in the afternoon. As this is an outdoor activity in the tropics, it is recommended light clothes, insect repellent, hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes are suggested. Do not forget your camera and plenty of film.
