The tour starts in 12 of October Square. It is interesting to go around the city of Ushuaia during your free time. Apart from being especially picturesque, there are sites worth visiting. As it is built on the hills of Monte Martial (Martial Mount), its streets are constantly going up and down. The port of Ushuaia, located in Maipú and Lasserre streets, is a customary stop for the cruise to Antarctica. Therefore, it is possible to see beautiful vessels. After passing by the Plaza 12 de Octubre (12 de Octubre Square) and its obelisk, there are two typical houses on Avenida Maipú: the first one, built in 1920, is the Police Department and the second one was built in the late XIX century. The Museo del Fin del Mundo (End-of-the-World Museum), located in Maipú and Rivadavia streets, contains a rich heritage: ona native objects, the gold fever, the history of the prison and the shipwrecks. It also has a library with the history, geography, flora and fauna, as well as postcards and photographs, of the area. The Museum is open from Monday through Saturday from 3pm to 7pm. After leaving behind the "Almirante Berisso" Naval Base, walk to the Museo Marítimo de Ushuaia (Ushuaia Maritime Museum) at Yahanes and Gobernador Paz streets, an ancient prison. It stopped functioning in 1947. Having a cold and severe structure, it is an interesting place to visit. It is open daily from 10am to 1pm and from 3pm to 8pm. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Church of Our Lady of Mercy), built in the late XIX century, is located on the Maipú street, between the Don Bosco and Juan Manuel de Rosas streets. Finally, the Saint Christopher Vessel, which ran aground in 1953 in the Bahía Ushuaia (Ushuaia’s Bay) in front of the Club Caza y Pesca (Hunting and Fishing Club), is a favorite spot. The inhabitants of the city remember the time when the vessel arrived to refloat the Monte Cervantes vessel, which had run aground in 1930 with 1,500 people on board. However, the Saint Christopher sank and remained in Ushuaia for good. During the whole ride, you will find other typical large houses, including the Centro de Información Turística (Tourist Information Center), located in the San Martín and Fadul streets.
