Ushuaia Travel Information

Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego

  • Ushuaia includes the city of Ushuaia, the Tierra del Fuego National Park (Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego) and several natural attractions (see Ushuaia map). Ushuaia is also point of departure for the spectacular trip to Antarctica.
  • Ushuaia has a population of 45.000 and the city developed under the frame of Cordón Martial and the Beagle Channel, so hilly streets are very common.
  • The Tierra del Fuego National Park is located 11km (7 miles) from Ushuaia and offers native forest with a rich variety of local fauna (see Ushuaia tours)
  • The Beagle Channel is another landmark of Ushuaia, and boat rides along the channel are a classic for tourists who want to get fantastic views of Ushuaia and visit several islands with attractions (see Ushuaia tours)

    Ushuaia Hotels, Hostels & Cottages

  • Ushuaia Hotels are not as common as hostels, inns or cottages. Even though the city offers most lodging alternatives, good five star hotels and four star hotels are hard to find. That is why tourists often book cozy cottages, inns or hostels with similar infrastructure and level of comfort but lower rates.
  • Some hotels are located outside the downtown area, even several miles away. We advise you to verify location before booking.
  • In most cases, Ushuaia hotels are very expensive and overrated for the services they provide. We advise you to see customers reviews or get local advice before booking

    Ushuaia Tours & Attractions

  • Ushuaia offers an excellent natural environment for open air activities and sports, such as skiing, trekking or mountain biking. (see Ushuaia pictures) A number of tours depart from Ushuaia by land and sea, including trips to Antarctica
  • The Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego is Ushuaia´s favorite attraction. It allows full contact with the native forest and fauna. Bahía Lapataia (Lapataia Bay) is the most visited site for its beauty and it can also be reached by boat (see Ushuaia tours).
  • The Tren del Fin del Mundo, (End-of-the-world Train) connects Ushuaia to the Park across native forest and beautiful rivers (see Ushuaia pictures)
  • Cerro Castor is Ushuaia´s ski center for downhill, cross-country skiing as well as other popular winter sports. It is located a few kilometers outside the city.
  • The trip to Antarctica is done in small sail-boats and larger vessels departing from the Ushuaia port during the summer. They cover a distance of 1,200km (745 miles), surrounded by floating pieces of ice, islands full of penguins, sea lions and birds, constantly struggling with cold weather and strong winds.

You may purchase tours and airport transfers in downtown
Ushuaia. Find InterHabit in 350 San Martin Ave (see map).

Ushuaia Car Rental, Airport Transfers & Transportation

  • Car rental in Ushuaia is offered by most international operators and a few local agencies. Renting a car is not worth if you plan to drive within the area because taxis are cheap and reliable. Tourists who rent a car and drive across the borderline to Chile (see Ushuaia map) must have special car permits.
  • Airport Transfers and taxis are commonly used to get from the airport to Ushuaia hotels. They are reliable and safe, provided that the services are contracted with established providers.
  • Cottages, inns & hotels located outside Ushuaia usually offer free downtown shuttle services.

    Tourist Information in Ushuaia

  • Ushuaia high season is between October 15th and March 15th. Remember that many tours and water transfers are subject to customers and climate.
  • The price level for food and accommodations is among the highest in Argentina. During the high season lodging rates go up by 30-50%. Air and ground transportation is also expensive.
  • Tierra del Fuego is a duty-free area and there are many shops selling imported products on Ushuaia´s main street, Avenida San Martín. Prices are not different from airport duty-free shops.
  • Ushuaia´s Tourist Board offers complete information in an ancient house located downtown (see Ushuaia map)
